Welcome to the surreal world of Axel Miret
"Welcome to my website - my name is Axel Miret.
Born in Brussels, Belgium in 1956, I'm a self-taught artist, creating my visionary/surreal art in pastels, charcoal and oils.
I sometimes describe my work as "photographs taken in the past", or in the world of ghosts - the invisible world. This shows particularly in my black and white work, while the works in colour tend to be more meditative and symbolic. There is an atmosphere of the surreal in most of my work.
In general, my work comes directly from my imagination. My starting point is often random marks on a piece of paper, which inspire and develop into the final picture. When working in black and white, I tend to start from a black background and add the white, moving from darkness to light. I often feel that creating my pictures is a journey of discovery.
Having felt drawn to Ireland, I lived for some years in the 1990's in Connemara and County Mayo, where the brooding landscapes inspired and influenced my body of work on the Irish Famine. I have been resident in West Cork since 2000.
I am a full member of the Pastel Society of Ireland and also a member of Visual Artists Ireland. My work is in many private collections in Europe, North America and the Far East and is also included in the Boyle Civic
Collection. I regularly exhibit at the Boyle Arts Festival, Hungry Hill Gallery (Adrigole, Beara Peninsula), The Hummingbird Gallery (Dunmanway, West Cork), EastWest Gallery (London) and Galerie 2016 (Brussels)
On this website you can see examples of my work (in the Gallery), find out more about me (About page) - get in touch with me (Contact), keep up to date with my new work and exhibitions (News), and see reviews of my work and an archive of my early works (Press)."
